Why cloud works: a reader’s perspective.

Running a restaurant chain that has multiple locations and many casual staff is like conducting a military operation, everyday. It’s vital that all managers and staff are connected to each other, in order for us to maintain and constantly improve our customer service standards.
Our restaurants are spread across the outer west corridor of Sydney and it’s my job to ensure that every venue is ticking along and that everyone is aligned to the right task at the right time. The biggest distance between locations is fifty kilometres and I need to know what is happening at each restaurant while I am travelling between locations.
We were seeking a software package that improved our timekeeping and payroll functions, and to specifically move away from paper and manual processes to a more automated process.
We had a look at Deputy which automated our timekeeping, integrated to payroll, included tasking and communications and offered it all via the cloud and mobile devices. Implementation was easy and the staff love it.
The cloud software allows all our managers to access Deputy at home, which improves their efficiencies when they are at their workplaces. It also allows them to keep an eye on what’s happening even when they aren’t there. And now that Deputy is available on iPhone app and tablets, it’s getting used more and more.
We have more than 70 staff checking their work schedules and tasks via their iPhones. That means more than a third of our staff are using the mobile cloud to be more efficient and stay on top of their individual tasks.
The benefits of communication and accountability in using Deputy are significant. When a task is completed, I get a notification on my phone that it has been completed. To me, that is the cloud in action, as I get peace of mind that the team is on top of important tasks. I can be in the car on the way to a restaurant or supplier meeting, and get updates from staff at the other restaurants.
We estimate we are saving $50,000 in senior management and payroll costs using Deputy. The efficiencies gained at the restaurants, while somewhat difficult to calculate, are considerable as well.
