Why cloud works: A reader’s perspective.
What do you do?
We’re a four-person electrical company in a little tourist village called Akaroa in New Zealand. We do domestic wiring, hot-water cylinders, satellite dishes and new houses for 600 people living here but over summer it gets really busy when all the holidaymakers come over. Because it’s on Banks Peninsula there are a lot of outer bays with farms about 30 minutes to an hour away.
How do you use your cloud software?
We thought it might be easier to motivate the guys. We bought them all a tablet and they can now see where they have to go and if the customer’s not there they can see the phone number to call them. They used to do it all on paper. I’d write it all down and they would bring it back with their hours. Now they can do it on the job, we have all our electrical parts listed on GeoOP and I just have to email the invoice to the customer.
They also take photos with their tablets to prove that they did a job. Or if they wired up a whole house they can go back and know exactly where the cable is after the builder has set it all up.
Another good thing is that they see where their customers are on the map. If they have to get hold of someone in the outer bays they know they can’t ring because they don’t have cellphone coverage. Or if one of the other electricians is just a few roads down I can get spare parts from them.
If the job is on hold then it’s right on-screen, bothering them and they have to make sure they finish jobs they have started. Before when jobs were on pieces of paper it would be somewhere in a folder just piling up.
What difference has the cloud made?
It saves me in the office the most time. GeoOP has saved me about an hour a day, five hours a week. Before that I had to input it all into the computer and now I just have to look through that the electricians haven’t missed anything and send it off.
The overview of the week is really good to see who goes where and if a customer cancels you just move it to another day whereas before on paper you had to rub it out. It’s much easier to look at and every electrician is a different colour.
The guys still have to input the information but they don’t have to look up the prices – they had to input the price by hand before.
It’s really good for me because I can oversee that we don’t put too many jobs on the guys. I know roughly how long they take I can see how many jobs they put on each day. It wasn’t really that obvious when it was on paper.
