Aims to ease the pain of migration.
One of cloud accounting vendor Xero’s oldest accounting partners has launched a standalone service to help businesses migrate from desktop accounting software MYOB to Xero.
LiveMigrate, made publicly available last week, was co-founded by New Zealand accounting firm DJCA, software development house Trineo and prominent cloud-computing analyst Ben Kepes of Diversity Consulting.
“I always thought the biggest barrier (to adoption of cloud accounting software) is the pain of migration,” Kepes said. The service was about “showing people that there’s an easy way to get out of the hell which is MYOB”. The “nightmare” of migrating three of his own businesses had helped him understand the challenges faced by other businesses and given him the knowledge to help them, he said.
Kepes said LiveMigrate was completely separate from DJCA’s accounting practice and that other accountants could use the service for their clients without risk of poaching. “There’s no lead generation,” he said. “We imagine there are a bunch of accountants that really don’t want to do the low-value migration stuff so they will probably use LiveMigrate for their clients,” Kepes said.
The LiveMigrate service used some automated processes but mainly relied on a team in New Zealand to process the data. The service would add the ability to migrate from QuickBooks later this year, Kepes added.
LiveMigrate came in three flavours priced from NZ$249 to NZ$749. The lite version was for people who just want their trial balances to get started, Kepes said. The Pro and Full Monty packages included migrating up to seven years of historical information “so they can completely throw away MYOB”.
LiveMigrate could process more than seven years of historical data, however transactional data wasn’t transferred.
“You wouldn’t be able to look at a six-year-old invoice and see the transaction data but you would be able to see your historical profit and loss and balance sheet and those sorts of things,” Kepes said. All open invoices and those from the current financial year were migrated.
